María Villares Varela

Maria Villares Varela holds a PhD title in Sociology from the University of A Coruña (25/10/2010). Her doctoral thesis, entitled ‘Immigration and Enterprise in Galicia: Distinguishing Mobilization of the Financial, Human and Social Capital’, was directed by Senior Lecturer Laura Oso Casas and it unanimously obtained the mark Cum Laude Pass with Distinction.

She currently works as a researcher in the Centre for Research in Ethnic Minority Entrepreneurship (CREME), of the University of Birmingham, UK. She is an associated researcher in the International Migration Institute of the University of Oxford. 

Her research fields include the areas of migration and labour integration, immigrant entrepreneurship, human capital and return immigration. During her research trajectory, she has studied in international universities such as the London Metropolitan University (London, UK), COMPAS (Center on Migration, Policy and Society, University of Oxford, UK; the IMES (Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies, University of Amsterdam, Netherlands); the School of Social Sciences-Oxford Brookes, Oxford, UK and the ERCOMER (European Research Centre on Migration and Ethnic Relations), University of Utrecht, Netherlands.
