Objective:

We explore the origins of political gender inequalities in attitudes and behaviors with the objective of identifying and proposing spaces for improving equality. It makes four main contributions to the study of the gender gap in political participation: (1) a shift in focus from attitudes to political behavior at the local and national levels; (2) the integration of context to explain gender differences in political participation by systematically mapping specific gender policies at the subnational level and the role of political representatives at the local level in the (dis)confirmation of gender stereotypes in politics; (3) the identification of the mechanisms by which gender gaps increase or even appear with the acquisition of adult roles; and (4) the incorporation of the interaction between context, the interaction between context, attitudes and behavior, and the role of political representatives at the local level in the (dis)confirmation of gender stereotypes in politics. Finally, (4) the incorporation of the interaction between the context, i.e., the policies and images of political representatives, and the mechanisms at the individual levels.
