Paula Varela Fernández

Pre-doctoral researcher contracted by the Xunta de Galicia

Paula Varela-Fernández is a predoctoral researcher by the Xunta de Galicia at the Faculty of Sociology of the University of A Coruña (UDC). After obtaining a degree in Sociology in 2020 at UDC, she completed a Master’s Degree in Advanced Studies in Social and Cultural Anthropology from the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) in 2021. Her FDP consisted of an ethnographic approach to body modification, while her FMP deals with the anthropological study of subversive trends such as Straight Edge (sXe). She is currently developing a PhD thesis about the relationship between body and technology through body modification, ethnographing professional studies of tattooing in the Galician field. Her research areas focus on the socio-anthropological analysis of body and emotions, the sociology of consumption and the comparative study of identities and sociocultural movements.
