Paula Varela Fernández is a pre-doctoral researcher contracted by the Xunta de Galicia in the Faculty of Sociology at the Universidade da Coruña. She graduated in Sociology at the Universidade da Coruña (2016-2020) and specialised in the Master’s Degree in Advanced Studies in Social and Cultural Anthropology at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (2020-2021). She did her Bachelor’s Thesis on the historical evolution of body modification and the processes of transculturation and symbolic and ideological representation associated with this phenomenon. Her Master’s thesis consisted of a theoretical-methodological review of the Straight Edge (sXe) movement within the hardcore punk subculture, investigating the symbolic-ideological heritage of subversive socio-cultural movements and their relationship with narcoculture. She is currently developing her doctoral thesis on the relationship between the body and technology through body modification and the impact of the processes of altering corporeality in relation to the implementation of socio-cultural and technological innovation plans in Galicia. Her lines of research focus on the socio-anthropological analysis of the body, from an approach close to the sociology of consumption and the study of socio-cultural movements and identity.
